Michael Green
Michael is a CMS mission partner living in Salt, northwest of the capital, Amman. He is a learning disabilities nurse and works with the Palestine Hospital as part of a joint, community based rehabilitation (CBR) network. This provides support to local CBR programmes for children and adults with any type of disability. The Network offers specialist services, training, supervision and follow-up for rehabilitation workers, teachers, volunteers and families.
Over the last three years his work in Jordan has evolved but is far from being established. At the moment his work is settled on four main centres serving their surrounding villages: Jofeh, in the Jordan Valley; Muwaqqar, to the east of Amman; Khaldiyya, on the old pilgrimage road between Amman and Damascus and Saydiyya, north-west of Khaldiyya. They are currently examining the possibility of working in Dhlayl, the town next to Khaldiyya. Most of Michael’s work is with the traditional Bedouin peoples, even if most now have settled into houses. His work itself involves travelling out to the centres, then making ‘house calls’. This involves triaging the clients, or making a continued assessment (sometimes including tests), providing advice or transferring them to the appropriate care provider. On Saturdays he has a clinic at the Palestine Hospital, allowing for more detailed assessment or follow up. Occasionally lectures are also held on various topics.
Michael is building close working relationships with many local care providers outside the network, include those of the state as well as NGOs and private care. The final aspect of the work within the network is the continence programme. This is to enable people to have a greater continence, and thus have more control of their lives; it is run in co-operation with the CBR occupational therapist from the Al-Hussein Society, and a urologist. Aside from all of this work, Michael is involved with the English-speaking Anglican congregation, especially the youth work, and is a member of the Arabic Young Adults fellowship in Amman. He has also a number of friendships with locals and expatriates, providing help with English conversation or understanding the Christian faith.
